Each season brings a new identity. Some identities last a lifetime, while others are temporary. It’s important to understand which identity to prioritize in each season. It can be difficult to know which hat to wear when you’re juggling work, being a parent, being a husband, being active, eating healthy, and the list goes on. Truth be told, it’s impossible to do it all perfectly, and nobody expects you to… except for you.
When we try to take on too much at once, we get overwhelmed by the chaos and can’t give 100% to anything. Instead, take note of your priorities each season. Some stages of life may ask for more family time or focus on our relationships, while others might require us to focus on our health or career. Frankly, if you don’t take the time to nurture the season you’re in when you’re in it, you’ll suffer in the long run.
Unfortunately, I see so many people drowning in chaos because they don’t know how to prioritize their roles. They exhaust themselves trying to do everything, or they neglect the core areas of their life currently requiring their focus. Unless we identify our goals and mission for each season, we easily get caught up in the busyness of it all.
Why We Prioritize Our Roles Each Season
Have you ever seen a bodybuilder compete? It’s amazing to see what time, focus, and dedication can achieve when you really commit to a mission! What most people don’t know, though, is that they don’t look like that year round. They train for a season to meet a goal, and during their “off-season” months they look like your average Joe. It’s physically impossible to be that ripped year-round, and it’s the same way for everything else.
You can’t be peaking in every area of life at all times… it’d be exhausting. You have to choose where to focus your energy for each period of your life. Below I’m sharing three ways you can stop living out of alignment, and start prioritizing your roles in each season.
- Identify Your Roles
The first step to properly prioritizing your life is to identify the different roles you play. Are you a father? Entrepreneur? Husband? Friend? Whatever your different titles are, write them down, and identify which areas you may be focusing too much time on… or not enough.
Incorrectly prioritizing your roles leads to a lack of balance in your life. Maybe you’re thriving in business but your relationship with your kids is suffering because of it. If you’re spending more time on things that ultimately bring you less fulfillment, taking ownership of that is the first step to redirecting your time.
- Prioritize Certain Roles For This Season
Once you’ve identified which roles are important during this season, you can start making choices to align your priorities. You can stop living in chaos and overwhelm from saying “yes” to too many things that aren’t currently serving you. You can finally live out your mission!
Start evaluating where you’ve been spending too much time….time that doesn’t benefit your current season of life. Then, identify ways to shift that time. Maybe instead of working late every weekday, take your wife on a date or go to your kids’ baseball game. There are simple ways to realign your life, but it all starts with you.
- Align Your Actions With Your Priorities
Oftentimes, I see men who think they know their priorities…and that’s enough. I can tell you right now that it isn’t. Those men are spending too much time on work calls during family time, going out with their friends instead of spending time with their kids, and their wives might even hate them. Their life is totally out of balance.
Without the conscious effort to put action behind your priorities, you’ll never see the fruition of their alignment. You have to choose between a night out with the guys and taking your kids to get ice cream. I’m not saying it’s always easy, but you have to make the effort to get your priorities in alignment. With time, this will become easier. The most important things in life will start coming naturally
If you find you’re incorrectly prioritizing roles in your life and you’re tired of living in the chaos, write down these steps and put them into action. Take accountability and make an effort to turn your life around. You can live in the balance and abundance you deserve if you pursue alignment in your core areas. You’re not running out of time: your time starts now.
